Background of the Study

Higher education institutions are increasingly adopting technology to improve the learning experience. Among these technologies, artificial intelligence (AI) has gained significant attention for its potential to personalize learning. AI-based personalized learning systems use algorithms to adapt educational content and teaching methods according to individual student needs, preferences, and learning styles. By leveraging data on student performance and engagement, these systems provide a more tailored and effective learning experience. Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, seeks to enhance its educational offerings by integrating AI-based personalized learning systems to improve student outcomes, engagement, and overall learning satisfaction. This study explores the design, implementation, and impact of AI-based personalized learning systems at the university.

Statement of the Problem

At Usmanu Danfodiyo University, many students struggle with generic teaching approaches that do not account for the varying learning styles, interests, and paces of individual students. Traditional, one-size-fits-all teaching methods often fail to engage students effectively, leading to suboptimal learning outcomes. AI-based personalized learning systems offer the potential to address these challenges by customizing content and learning pathways to fit individual students' needs. However, the adoption of such systems in the university context remains largely unexplored. This study aims to investigate how AI-based personalized learning systems can enhance the higher education learning experience at Usmanu Danfodiyo University.

Objectives of the Study

1. To design and implement an AI-based personalized learning system for students at Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto.

2. To evaluate the effectiveness of AI-based personalized learning in improving student engagement and academic performance.

3. To assess the impact of the AI-based system on the overall learning experience of students at the university.

Research Questions

1. How effective is the AI-based personalized learning system in improving student academic performance at Usmanu Danfodiyo University?

2. To what extent does the AI-based system increase student engagement and motivation in the learning process?

3. How does the AI-based personalized learning system enhance the overall learning experience of students?

Research Hypotheses

1. The AI-based personalized learning system will significantly improve student academic performance compared to traditional methods.

2. The use of AI-based personalized learning systems will lead to higher levels of student engagement and motivation.

3. Students will report a more satisfactory learning experience with the AI-based system compared to traditional learning methods.

Significance of the Study

This study will provide insights into the role of AI in personalizing education and enhancing the learning experience in higher education. The findings could serve as a model for other institutions seeking to implement AI-based personalized learning systems to improve student outcomes.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on the design, implementation, and evaluation of an AI-based personalized learning system at Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto. Limitations include the university's readiness to adopt AI-based systems and potential challenges in data collection for system development.
